Strategic Land Use Planning

Strategic Planning puts in place long term strategies and plans to ensure Cairns retains its enviable lifestyle and unique character, while also allowing for continued growth and development.

Project areas include:

  • Daintree Buyback
The former Douglas Shire Council's Planning Scheme recognises the need to cap development to preserve this extraordinary part of the region.
  • Neighbourhood Character Study
The Cairns Regional Council has commissioned a Neighbourhood Character Study to undertake a detailed review of existing character precincts and additional areas in Freshwater and Gordonvale which have been identified as having potential neighbourhood character significance.
  • CairnsPlan
CairnsPlan is the Planning Scheme for the City of Cairns.
  • Mount Peter Master Planning
The Mount Peter area has been recognised by the Far North Queensland Regional Plan and the CairnsPlan as a priority urban growth corridor.
  • Smithfield Town Centre
The Smithfield Catchment Area, from Machans Beach to Ellis Beach, is expected to support an additional 18,000 people by 2030. Given this rapid growth, it is important for Council to look at long-term planning to ensure orderly and sequential development of the remaining potential commercial land.
  • Cairns Style Design Guide
The Cairns Style Design Guide describes in words, pictures and diagrams - the tropical style that is the desired design direction for the City of Cairns.
  • Edmonton Town Centre
Planning is well underway for the Edmonton Town Centre. The centre will be master planned and will embrace the region's character while promoting tropical design.
  • Environmental Management
Council is committed to implementing management practices that conserve our unique natural environment and protect its aesthetic and diverse biological values.
  • Cultural Heritage
The Cairns Heritage Strategy has been developed to coordinate the approach to the management and retention of the cultural heritage places. It outlines a range of non-statutory and statutory measures that are progressively being implemented.
  • Vegetation Preservation Areas
Proposed vegetation preservation area for Settlement Areas North of the Daintree River.
