Council supports New Deal for Cairns - October 2009
Relief, Recovery, Reform

Cairns Regional Council is at the forefront of support for the New Deal launched by the region’s peak business and industry leaders in October 2009. Seeking additional State and Federal assistance for the region is high on Council's agenda, manifesting in the call for the Cultural Precinct funding of $230 million.

Cairns Chamber of Commerce together with Advance Cairns and Tourism Tropical North Queensland, both partly funded by Council, have crafted an urgent recovery plan for the tropical north. Focused on the 3 Rs of Relief, Recovery and Reform, the New Deal will be submitted to the State and Federal Governments calling for action.

Central to the plan is the commitment to the new Cultural Precinct from both levels of Government. The Precinct features a Regional Performing Arts Centre and Museum on the waterfront opposite the Cairns Convention Centre. Council identified the critical need for this Precinct in its Cultural Plan 2009-2014 and Corporate Plan 2009-2014, and is working with local leaders to lobby the State and Federal governments for support.
